When you hear the word slot, you probably think about a narrow opening into which coins can be dropped or inserted. However, the term has many other meanings: A slot can be a small space in a schedule or program where an activity can take place; or it can refer to the position of a player on a team’s roster.

A slot machine is a gambling machine that accepts cash or, in “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, a paper ticket with a barcode, and pays out credits based on a combination of symbols. A slot receiver is a special type of wide receiver that has unique skills and abilities, making them an essential part of an offense. They typically line up slightly in the backfield, a few steps off of the line of scrimmage, and are often more agile and flexible than outside wide receivers.
